An alternate work of Nikon lens brain which gives the potential to take spectacular, unusual, never-before-available, super-wide pics. As currently as a few years ago, before Nikon learned over to tidy sum bring forth aspheric elements, engineering this complex 14 element lens at a very good reason cost would happen to have been unimaginable. A nice suprise is that this DX lens can also be used FX, with some limitations naturally. Although it will give the full zoom range only if used from the smaller DX format, it in reality covers the frame of an FX camera - not over exactly the full range but from 24mm down to about 18mm focal distance, with satisfactory vignetting (edge blackening). I am using it that way on my film Nikon F6 and digital D700. (For the D700, turn the DX Crop default OFF and call on the Vignette Control to HIGH.) This is pretty cool basically because it imply someone who would love only periodic use of an 18-24mm lens on a full frame camera does not have to walk out and buy a new lens if they already have this one.
I disagree with the reviewers who complain about the plastic, Made in China quality. If this lens were made of brass and steel like a Leica, it would consider twice as much, cost a lot more, and become no better photographically. Is it more crucial that you have the controls be smooth than to catch new kinda photos? In my estimation Nikon has brought the right approaching - state of the art computational design, groundbreaking fabrication of aspherical elements, good enough construction, and find capability within your budget for the unskilled photographers.
